Shaq Up in Beantown – Ex-Laker Shaquille O’Neal opts for Celtics

It was only a matter of time before the Big Aristotle became “the Big Shaqrecaun”. Okay maybe that nickname needs work, but the point is Shaquille O’Neal is officially part of the Boston Celtics and it feels weird and kind of creepy if you’re a Lakers fan. Before signing, Shaq had failed to land mid-level exception offers from Atlanta, Dallas and even teams in Europe (can you say desperate?). After the Cavs said thanks but no thanks to re-signing the Big Fella, Shaq realized there weren’t many options left.

Boston Market

Enter Boston, a team in the market for size after the starting center Kendrick Perkins severely injured his knee in the 2010 NBA Finals. Shaq reportedly signed a 2-year deal for the veteran’s minimum totaling $2.8 million. Ouch, major hit to the ego (not to mention the pocket book). The Celtics have now reloaded their frontcourt with the addition of Shaq and Jermaine O’Neal and should give the Miami Heat fits down low come playoff time. NBA fans, are you feeling a Lakers-Heat or Lakers-Celtics 2011 NBA Finals?

Shaq hopes to be a 4 ring clover for the Celtics this year in Beantown. Speaking of beans, that's still 1 ring behind Kobe Bean Bryant.

Shaq Bench Press

The Celtics pressed Shaq to come off the bench before they agreed to sign him. All indications point to Shaq being okay with this, but you just know he’s licking his chops waiting for starting center Jermaine O’Neal to get injured. Yes, a literal Shaq attack! Which brings me to my next point: Boston now has two O’Neals. There are only two O’Neals in the entire NBA and they both play for Boston now. This means Shaq’s jersey is going to have S. O’Neal on the back rather than just O’Neal. Another hit to the ego!

O’Neals are Ol’ Neals

Regardless of who gets more minutes, both O’Neals are old and injury-prone and neither is explosive anymore. Jermaine will begin the year as the starter after averaging 13.6 points and 6.9 rebounds per game last season in Miami. The Celtics can expect similar or slightly better numbers from him while knowing he can get injured at any moment. No stranger to injury himself, the other other O’Neal (that’s right Shaq has fallen that far) will have to prove to the Boston faithful that he still has something left in the tank.

Heat Check

“Bringing the Heat”

Who’s following the Big 3 to South Beach?  Fans, GMs and LeBron haters all want to know.  Lakers fans in particular have a vested interest in the question; after all, we’d love knowing who we’ll be seeing in the NBA Finals next year.  The Heat currently have four players under contract: LeBron James, Dwayne Wade, Chris Bosh and Mario Chalmers.  Here is a list of some of the players you should expect to see on Miami’s roster next season, beginning with potential starters:

“Heat Wave”

SF/SG Mike Miller – Miller has agreed to and signed the 5 year, $30M contract the Heat offered him a few days ago.  The sweet-stroking swingman came at the request of The King himself and provides Miami with another weapon in their quest for a championship.  Possible nickname: Heat Stroke.

PF Udonis Haslem – Haslem’s the one guy Miami desperately wants to bring back.  After agreeing to sign-and-trade deals for LeBron and Bosh, they’re in position to re-sign him to a fair-value deal.  Dallas has come in with a 3 year, $20M full mid-level offer that may make Udonis think twice.  UPDATE: Haslem has taken less money to return to the Heat, turning down better offers from Denver and Dallas.

PG Derek Fisher – The Heat are looking for a veteran PG to mentor Mario Chalmers and have targeted Fisher.  The Lakers may find themselves in a bidding war for their clutch-shooting floor general if they don’t pony up the $5M/year Derek is asking for.  UPDATE: Fisher has re-signed with the Los Angeles Lakers for 3 years, $10M.

C Zydrunas Ilgauskas – LeBron’s former teammate is said to be considering joining The King in South Beach.  He’d likely sign for the veteran’s minimum of $1.4M and would give Bosh a chance to play strictly PF next season for Miami.  UPDATE: Ilgauskas is close to signing with the Heat.

PF Juwan Howard – the gritty veteran would provide leadership and rebounding for Miami at a bargain rate.  The big man is being targeted by the Heat and a deal for the veteran’s minimum could be done soon.

PG Jason Williams – White Chocolate already has a championship with the Heat as a result of his first stint with the team, why not give it another go?  With all of the double teams Wade and LeBron would command, J-Will would be a perfect fit at PG to knock down all the wide open 3’s.

Shaq shouldn't expect a call from Pat Riley, though he has played with both D-Wade AND LeBron. Hmmm...

Miami is also looking at a slew of veterans, including former members of the Heat:

“Subs of South Beach”
PG Carlos Arroyo
C Joel Anthony
SG/SF James Jones
PG Mike James
C Jamaal Magloire
C Dexter Pittman (rookie)
PF Jarvis Varnado (rookie)

After all of the dust settles, the Miami Heat roster should look something like this, barring any major trades:

Depth Chart
PG Jason Williams, Mario Chalmers, Mike James
SG Dwayne Wade, James Jones
SF LeBron James, Mike Miller, Jarvis Varnado
PF Chris Bosh, Udonis Haslem, Juwan Howard
C Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Joel Anthony, Dexter Pittman

Meet your 2010-2011 Miami Heat!  This team would no doubt be good enough to contend for a championship, but I still think Boston and Orlando will have something to say come playoff time.  Either way, the Lakers will be poised for another 3-peat and Kobe will be trying on his 6th ring while LeBron wonders how having even one feels like.

Farmar’s Market – Lakers Jordan Farmar nets deal with New Jersey

It’s official Lakers fans, hometown favorite Jordan Farmar will not be coming back to Los Angeles.

Net Gain

Farmar has decided to take his game to the New Jersey Nets after garnering interest from both Indiana and Portland in free agency. At 3 years, $12 Million the contract is a good deal financially for both sides. Having missed out on Jordan, the Lakers now focus their attention on re-signing guards Derek Fisher and Shannon Brown.

Farmar, Jordan Farmar, New Jersey Nets, Lakers

Good luck getting a "Farmar's Tan" in New Jersey, Jordan. Lakers fans will miss you buddy.

New Jersey for Farmar

Farmar had expressed a desire to be a starting point guard in the NBA, and he knew he wouldn’t get that opportunity in a Lakers uniform. Unfortunately nobody told Jordan that the Nets already have a starting all-star point guard named Devin Harris, so it’s anybody guess as to how many minutes Farmar will see in New Jersey.

Best case scenario, Nets coach Avery Johnson takes a liking to Farmar’s defense and gives him extra minutes alongside Harris at the two-guard spot. If Harris does go down for an extended period, and given his injury history it’s very possible, Jordan may get his wish to start. Until then however, Farmar’s move from sunny L.A. where he grew up to New Jersey is a nose-scratcher.
