Lakers need to finish 5-2 to hang onto Western Conference #8 Seed

With the Lakers dominating 101-81 win over the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday night, the fight for the West’s coveted #8 seed is now essentially a two-horse race between the Lakers and Utah.

With the loss Dallas falls two games behind the Lakers in the loss column, but because the Lakers won the tie-breaker it is actually a three-game lead. After losing to Denver Thursday, the Mavs would have to go 7-0 the rest of the way and hope the Lakers stumble to 3-4 to overtake L.A. Not happening.

Golden Nugget: Denver beats Utah, helps out Lakers

The Lakers chances of making the 2013 NBA Playoffs significantly improved Wednesday night when the Denver Nuggets beat the Jazz in Utah. It was a game the Lakers needed Utah to lose, as the Jazz have 3 remaining games with lowly New Orleans and Minnesota (twice) still on their schedule.

The Lakers now own a half game advantage over Utah for that eighth and final playoff spot with seven games remaining on their schedule. The Jazz still have a tough home game with possible first-round opponent Oklahoma City coming up, as well as road tests at Golden State and Memphis.

Utah has it much easier down the stretch than the Lakers. While the Lakers play all but one of their remaining games at Staples Center, they face much tougher opponents. Given Utah’s favorable schedule, that game against the Grizzlies to close the regular season could decide who get the #8 seed in the West.

Home Cookin’: Projecting the Lakers final seven games

Make no mistake about it Lakers fans– the season was on the line Tuesday night when L.A. and Dallas squared off. Had the Lakers lost that game, it’s likely that either the Jazz or the Mavs would have grabbed that eighth and final playoff spot.

With that huge win and Utah’s loss to Denver, the Lakers most likely need to go 5-2 down the stretch to make the playoffs. This is assuming that the Jazz lose two of the three following games: at Golden State, vs. Oklahoma City, at Memphis. There’s a good chance they do just that.

The Lakers need the Oklahoma City thunder to beat the Jazz in Utah

The Lakers need the Oklahoma City thunder to beat the Jazz in Utah next week.

The Lakers need to win their home games against New Orleans, Golden State and Houston. If they can’t win those games, they probably don’t deserve to make the playoffs. They also need to find a way to win at Portland, second night of a back-to-back after the Hornets game. It will be the Lakers’ last chance to win both sides of a back-to-back so the pressure is on.

If they win those four games, the Lakers could go 1-2 against their toughest remaining opponents: vs. Memphis, at L.A. Clippers and vs. San Antonio. Given that all three of those games are at Staples Center, the Lakers might even be able to steal two out of three.

This sets up a wild weekend in Los Angeles as the Lakers almost certainly have to win one of their two games against the Grizzlies or Clippers or risk missing the playoffs altogether.

2012 NBA PLAYOFFS – First Round Series Predictions

WESTERN CONFERENCE

#1 San Antonio (50-16) vs. #8 Utah (36-30)

The Spurs drew the easiest Western conference opponent possible in their first round series. The Rockets or Suns would have stretched the floor with 3-point shooters and either team could have won a game or even two against San Antonio. While the blue-collar Utah Jazz are hungry and well-coached, they are severely over-matched in this series and should get swept out of the first round. After being shocked by the #8 seed Grizzlies last season, perhaps this is just what San Antonio needs for their confidence.

     Spurs in 4

#4 Memphis (41-25) vs. #5 L.A. Clippers (40-26)

Two of the hottest teams to end the season face off in perhaps the most intriguing matchup of the first round. The Clippers have the best player on the court in Chris Paul but Memphis comes in with a more-balanced team and more importantly more playoff experience. Throw in the fact that the Grizzlies got home-court advantage on the last day of the regular season and I like Memphis to edge the Clippers out in a very competitive back-and-forth series. Look for the Grizzlies to use their inside game against the undersized Clipps as they move on to an epic rematch of Spurs-Grizzlies.

     Grizzlies in 7

#2 Oklahoma City (47-19) vs. #7 Dallas (36-30)

The defending NBA champion Dallas Mavericks take on title favorite Oklahoma City in a rematch of last year’s Western Conference Finals. The Mavs took that series 4-1 on their way to the NBA Finals but things should be much different this time around. The Thunder are loaded at every position and have two legitimate MVP candidates this season in Durant and Westbrook while Dallas has struggled to find an identity after the losing Tyson Chandler in free agency. Experience, Dirk Nowitzki and the heart of a champion should all make this series competitive.  At the end of the day however, the younger, more talented team will move on to face the Lakers in the most anticipated matchup of the 2012 NBA Playoffs.

     Thunder in 6

#3 L.A. Lakers (41-25) vs. #6 Denver (38-28)

Many Lakers fans were salivating at the chance to exact revenge on Dallas this year in the first round. Instead, the Lakers drew the Denver Nuggets and this Lakers fan couldn’t be happier. As pointed out in depth in “Golden Nuggets: 5 Reasons Denver better matchup than Dallas for L.A.”, Denver is a much easier matchup for the Lakers than Dallas. After being swept by the Mavs last post-season and even struggling against New Orleans in the first round, the Lakers could use a series like this to get their playoff swagger back. If the Lakers pound the ball inside and control tempo they should be able to beat the Nuggets quite handily, maybe even sweep them.

EASTERN CONFERENCE

#1 Chicago (50-16) vs. #8 Philadelphia (35-31)

Derrick Rose and the Chicago Bulls look to begin their championship run against the struggling 76ers. Philadelphia limped into the playoffs after starting the season as one of the top teams in the East and draw a tough matchup against defensive-minded Chicago. Speaking of limping, the reigning MVP Derrick Rose missed over 25 games this season due to various ailments but should be ready for this series. While he gives the Bulls a huge advantage in the backcourt, the real mismatch here is in the frontcourt. The Sixers lack a true center and will have fits dealing with Joakim Noah, Carlos Boozer and Taj Gibson inside. Both teams are well-coached, but Chicago should win this series easily.

     Bulls in 5

#4 Boston (39-27) vs. #5 Atlanta (40-26)

The Celtics are one of the more difficult teams to figure out as we enter the postseason. They struggled early in the season but after switching Kevin Garnett to center and moving Avery Bradley into the starting lineup, they’ve played extremely well. Boston has both experience and a huge edge in coaching which should allow them to advance past the Hawks, even if the series does start in Atlanta. Being without all-star Al Horford for the playoffs certainly does not help Atlanta’s cause either. Only because Atlanta has home-court advantage and Ray Allen is injured for Boston, I’ll pick the Celtics to win the series but not sweep the Hawks.

     Celtics in 5

#2 Miami (46-20) vs. #7 New York (36-30)

It’s LeBron vs. ‘Melo in a matchup loaded with NBA superstars. The Knicks hope to exorcise their playoff demons this year after getting swept by the Boston Celtics in embarrassing fashion last season. That’ll be easier said than done against a Miami Heat poised to return the NBA Finals in a weak Eastern Conference. Carmelo will have to average 30 ppg and role players like Baron Davis and Tyson Chandler will have to step up big if the Knicks have upset aspirations. That being said, New York will be lucky to win a single game in this series as they’re clearly outmatched defensively.

     Heat in 5

#3 Indiana (42-24) vs. #6 Orlando (37-29)

What could have been an intriguing series figures to be the most dull matchup of the 2012 NBA Playoffs thanks to Dwight Howard’s back injury. The Pacers have been the surprise team of the East this season thanks to solid defense and balanced scoring. While they lack a true superstar, Danny Granger, David West, Darren Collison and Roy Hibbert are all studs meaning the Pacers should make quick work of Orlando. That being said, teams in the East always find ways to prolong an easy series, so I’m predicting Big Baby Davis and the sharp-shooting Magic will steal a couple of games in this series.

#3 Lakers vs. #6 Nuggets: Pre-Series Analysis

Co-Written by Hunter Black-Mamba & Eric Busta-Mamba

The #3 Los Angeles Lakers take on the #6 Denver Nuggets in the first round of the 2012 NBA Playoffs. LakerMagic looks at that series in depth as the Lakers begin their “Road to Redemption”.

Series History

The Nuggets and Lakers have met numerous times in the NBA playoffs so there is some familiarity between the teams.  That said, the Lakers have dominated the series history on their way to taking 8 out of 9 series in the playoffs.  Due to this dominance, it’s no wonder LakerMagic is stressing that Denver is the better matchup to Dallas for the Lakers in the first round.

Lakers Advantages

The Lakers come into the series with three all-stars in Bryant, Bynum and Gasol that all have extensive playoff experience. They should be able to dominate a young Denver team that doesn’t even have an all-star on the roster. Look for Kobe to average anywhere from 23-28 ppg in this series.

The Lakers also have two future Hall of Fame big men in Gasol and Bynum who should dominate the undersized Nuggets. Denver will put up the likes of JaVale McGee and Timothy Mozgov in attempt to slow down the Lakers’ twin towers. If the Lakers play inside-out and utilize their size advantage, this should be an easy series for the Lakers.

Pau Gasol, Andrew Bynum, Bynum, Gasol, Bynum block

Bynum and Gasol will look to control the paint against an undersized Denver Nuggets squad.

Nuggets Advantages

The Nuggets come into the series as the highest scoring team in the NBA. They did this by controlling tempo and getting up and down the floor. Point guards Ty Lawson and Andre Miller will try to speed things up against an older, slower Lakers squad. If they are successful in this task they could steal a game or two from the Lakers.

Denver may also have the coaching edge as Nuggets Coach George Karl has always gotten the most out of his players. Look for Karl to throw everything but the kitchen sink at Kobe and the Lakers in attempt to pull off the unlikely upset.

Matchup to Watch

SG Kobe Bryant vs. Arron Afflalo

The Black Mamba has more experience and skill than fellow SG Arron Afflalo and should get his shots in this serious. However, don’t expect it to come easy for Bryant as Afflalo is one of the better defenders in the league at the two-guard position. While Afflalo will often cover Kobe one-on-one, expect the Nuggets to throw lots of double teams the Mamba’s way as they attempt to make things difficult for the Lakers star. Lakers fans can expect physicality, trash-talking and an elbow or two as the Nuggets attempt to limit the Mamba’s productivity.

Key Injuries

Los Angeles Lakers

SF Metta World Peace (Out 6 games, Suspension) – Metta World Peace will make the first six games of this series, if it even gets that far. Devin Ebanks will start and Matt Barnes will log minutes at SF when he returns from his ankle injury.

SF Matt Barnes (Day-to-Day, Ankle) – Matt Barnes will try to tough it out as he recovers from an ankle injury suffered late in the regular season. With World Peace out for most of the series, the Lakers will need Barnes to step up on both ends of the floor.

Denver Nuggets

SF Wilson Chandler (Out for Season, Hip) – The most versatile player in the Nuggets roster will miss the entire postseason with a hip injury that required surgery. Denver will miss Chandler while Danilo Gallinari will play more minutes.

Series Predictions

Best Case Scenario for Lakers: 4-game sweep

Best Case Scenario for Nuggets: 7-game series

LakerMagic Prediction: Lakers in 5
