Heat Stroke – Miami signs Shane Battier over Lakers Shannon Brown

Lakers fans, it looks like the Heat got their guy. Veteran swingman Shane Battier announced today via his Twitter account that he will sign with the Miami Heat on the first day of free agency.

Low Down Dirty Shane

This is a huge get for Miami as Battier is regarded as one of the best teammates in all of the NBA. He’s unselfish, a scrappy defender, has tons of playoff experience and is a proven winner. Shane also has a sweet stroke from 3-point range, something the Heat were hoping to get out of forward Mike Miller last season. After reaching the 2011 NBA Finals last season, Miami and the “Big 3″ should be poised to make another deep run in the Eastern Conference playoffs with the addition of sharp-shooting Battier.

What can Brown do for you Lakers fans?

Brown Recluse

The good news for Lakers fans is that Battier’s signing has eliminated the Heat from guard Shannon Brown’s wish list. That now leaves the Lakers, New Orleans and Boston as the most likely landing spots for Brown according to rumors and reports. Re-signing Brown is far from a given for the Lakers, however.

LakerMagic puts the chances of the Lakers re-signing Shannon at less than 50% due to his desire to get more minutes or even start, something he’ll only be guaranteed on another team. Stay tuned to see which team Brown will be reeling off highlight dunks for this season.

Farmar’s Market – Lakers Jordan Farmar nets deal with New Jersey

It’s official Lakers fans, hometown favorite Jordan Farmar will not be coming back to Los Angeles.

Net Gain

Farmar has decided to take his game to the New Jersey Nets after garnering interest from both Indiana and Portland in free agency. At 3 years, $12 Million the contract is a good deal financially for both sides. Having missed out on Jordan, the Lakers now focus their attention on re-signing guards Derek Fisher and Shannon Brown.

Farmar, Jordan Farmar, New Jersey Nets, Lakers

Good luck getting a "Farmar's Tan" in New Jersey, Jordan. Lakers fans will miss you buddy.

New Jersey for Farmar

Farmar had expressed a desire to be a starting point guard in the NBA, and he knew he wouldn’t get that opportunity in a Lakers uniform. Unfortunately nobody told Jordan that the Nets already have a starting all-star point guard named Devin Harris, so it’s anybody guess as to how many minutes Farmar will see in New Jersey.

Best case scenario, Nets coach Avery Johnson takes a liking to Farmar’s defense and gives him extra minutes alongside Harris at the two-guard spot. If Harris does go down for an extended period, and given his injury history it’s very possible, Jordan may get his wish to start. Until then however, Farmar’s move from sunny L.A. where he grew up to New Jersey is a nose-scratcher.

Philin’ Up to It – Phil Jackson will Coach Lakers One Final Season

Suck it Boston!!!  The “Zen Master” Phil Jackson will return to coach the Lakers for the 2010-2011 season, letting us all breathe a collective sigh of relief.  He announced the decision today and released the following statement: “Count me in.  After a couple weeks of deliberation, it is time to get back to the challenge of putting together a team that can defend its title in the 2010-11 season.   It’ll be the last stand for me, and I hope a grand one.”

The "Bromance" will continue for one final season...

The basketball deity made the announcement just hours after Byron Scott was named the Cleveland Cavaliers head coach and days after Doc Rivers decided to return to Boston.  This is tremendous news for the Lakers on multiple fronts.  First, Phil gives this Lakers team the best chance at winning it all again.  Given that this will be his last season coaching, both Phil and his players will have added motivation to get that elusive 3-peat.  The move also means that our own free agents, mainly Derek Fisher and Shannon Brown, are more likely to re-sign.  I doubt D-Fish would have taken a substantial pay cut if Brian Shaw was coaching the team.  Additionally, it should help attract some of the role players (Steve Blake, Raja Bell and Anthony Morrow) the Lakers are currently targeting.  In other words, I’ll see you all at next year’s Lakers parade.

As Vic the Brick would say…”Zen Master, Philin’ you!!!”
